BEMIDJI — Stronger Together: Land of the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging, Minnesota Chippewa Tribes, Northwoods Caregivers, Sanford Health and Wisdom Steps have teamed up to offer Better Choices, Better Health: Living Well with Chronic Pain.

This free workshop is for people or caregivers of someone with chronic pain.  Participants will learn about the differences between acute and chronic pain, how to pace activity, prioritize rest, and make lifestyle adjustments.

The workshop meets once a week for six weeks and is designed for those dealing with chronic pain  and their caregivers or family members. These group sessions are led by trained leaders, one or both of whom live with chronic conditions themselves.

Space is limited and registration is required. This workshop was developed by Stanford University; now called the Self Management Resource Center. Research has shown that the workshop is effective in helping people achieve better health, less time in the hospital and a more active lifestyle.

Subjects covered include:

• Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep

• Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance

• Appropriate use of medications

• Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
