Robert “Pete” C. Peterson, 79, of Benedict, Minn., lost his battle with COPD and passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be held March 23 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Church in Walker with a gathering time for family and friends beginning at 1 p.m. Military honors will be provided by the Spencer-Ross American Legion Post 134 of Walker.
Pete was born May 12, 1933, in Brewster, Minn., to Albert and Faye (Blair). He joined the Navy at age 17 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
At age 13, he began working for O.P. Skaggs Grocery Store in Worthington, which was owned by Rod Hallbeck. He married Molly Hallbeck in 1954, and they continued in the grocery business, opening Preston IGA in Preston, Minn., in 1965.
They moved to Benedict in 1978 and Pete worked locally for Lindy’s Plumbing and Heating, and Walker Hardware until his retirement in 1995. Pete and Molly spent 10 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., until his health declined.
Pete loved the northwoods and spent endless hours fishing on Benedict Lake and tending his own nature preserve in his backyard. He received his fondest wish to be able to stay in his home and watch the deer until his passing.
Pete is survived by Molly, his wife of 58 years; four children, Debbie (Greg) Goodnow of Mantorville, Kathy  (Larry) Luttmers of Henning, Tim (Karen) Peterson of Mantorville and Paula James (fiance Shawn Coil) of LeSueur; five grandchildren, Jonathon (Joslyn) Osten, Sara (Mike) Chicos, David (Becca) Peterson, Joseph Peterson and Ben James; two great-grandchildren (and one on the way); two special nephews, Rod and Bruce Pieper;                                                    as well as many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Ruby Pieper.
