Emily LaFond has taken her business from an idea and built it into a store-front studio that revolves around creativity, community, communication, sociability, and humor.
It didn’t all just happen at once either. Before she even thought about buying a place where she could host painting parties, she would fill her vehicle up with art supplies and bring the party to your house or business (which she still does by reservation). She’ll tell you it hasn’t been easy, but you can tell it’s rewarding for her as you step inside the new space at 410 Minnesota Ave that she relocated from Hackensack. It’s very open and clean, everything seems to have its place, and she is a thoughtful host.
Fourteen hour days have been the norm as she has been getting her new studio ready for the May 4 grand opening, when everything in the store will be discounted for the day. The walls are blanketed with stencils and some finished signs, the floor is set with work stations seating 44, and the paints and stains are fully stocked. There will also be a drawing with multiple prizes for participants. Both walk-ins and reservations are welcome as well as all forms of payment.
The concept has been well received and adding a little down-home style to your house, cabin, or business decor definitely has its place in Walker’s little-town, big-lake culture. Just visit most of the other storefronts along Walker’s main street, most of them have all kinds of down home kitsch that has become synonymous with the “lake-life.” One Little Piggy has something on them all though. It has the added personal touch that comes from taking the time and effort to do it yourself making it just a little bit more special.
Her wood signs range in size from 10-by-24 inches up to 12-by-60 inches. Custom shirts are available (there are a few on display) as well as custom decals. Just ask for a quote.
Store hours are 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for open painting sessions and 6-9 p.m. for a “pick your project” session, splitting the day in two shifts. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
