Six Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig Youth Leaders traveled May 19 to attend Close Up in Washington, D.C.

Eighth-graders Lanahny Beaulieu-Banks and Helainea Roybal, and ninth-graders Tehya Carter, Katrina Ducheneaux, Cecelia Meat and Me-tahna Steeprock reached their fundraising goals and were able to make the trip.

Youth Leaders is a student organization that works to build a positive school community. Close Up is a program that aims to develop the skills and attitudes of informed and engaged citizens. In addition to participating in interactive lessons on the process of and the history behind federal government, students toured national monuments, memorials and museums.

The ninth-grade students had a day on Capitol Hill where they spent time with Sen. Tina Smith and Rep. Pete Stauber. They also visited the office of Sen. Amy Klobuchar and toured the capitol building.
