The five WHA students competing at the NSDA Tournament were (from left) Logan Wales, Jayda Dickson, Willow Damar, Dylan Johnson and Molly Massar.

Last Friday and Saturday Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School hosted the National Speech and Debate Association qualifying tournament.

This tournament, which hosts the teams within the Northern Lights region of Minnesota, determines which speakers will compete at nationals this summer in Dallas.  Because entrance into the National Speech and Debate Association requires students to be in ninth-grade and higher, only senior high speakers competed.

Of the five Walker Talkers who entered the tournament, Logan Wales competed in Drama; Jayda Dickson in Informative; Molly Massar and Dylan Johnson in Duo and advanced into semifinals; and Willow Damar competed in Drama and also advanced to semifinals.

Most categories held four preliminary speaking rounds. The top 12 speakers in each category advanced to the semifinal round and the top six speakers advanced to the final round.

Depending on the amount of entries in each category, the top two, three, or four speakers in the final round advanced to nationals.

With the passing of the tournament, WHA has completed its tournament hosting for the season. Now the team will focus on the one remaining invitational tournament in Grand Rapids this weekend, before competing in subsections Monday.
