WHA second-graders and staff celebrated their accomplishments with a trip to the WACC to meet with Walker Rotary Club members.

The Walker Rotary Club has once again supported students who worked diligently with teachers and paraprofessionals who provided an extra effort in furthering their reading skills as second-graders at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School.

“The goal that second grade set for the Rotary Reading Challenge was for  80 percent of our students will improve reading fluency and accuracy. We actually had 93 percent of our students meet the goal,” said Cindy Alto, a second-grade teacher.

The Rotary Reading Challenge has been able to acquire funding from many local businesses to have each student who has achieved their goal given incentives and awards. Each student received a certificate of accomplishment and a medal award.

Rotarians also read every week to the students furthering their inquisitiveness into the joy of reading. As it has been said that at this stage of learning, how to read is transforming into learning from reading.

The smile on the faces of the students as they received their awards was quite telling of their sense of accomplishment.
