The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that continuously strives to build the state’s hunting and conservation legacy, is a new member of the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Board member Kevin Merten receives the First Business Dollar from Chamber employee Roxie Parks. Nearly 20,000 members across the state support the mission and organization. The winter of 1968-1969 was a brutal one in northern Minnesota which prompted a group, subsequently named Save Minnesota Deer, to seek the attention and assistance of the Legislature to save the starving deer. Eleven years later, based on this group’s success, members decided to expand their purpose and create an organization that covers the entire state. On June 30, 1980, such an organization evolved, the Minnesota Deer Hunters’ Association, created by hunters, for hunters. Over the past 35 years, MDHA has been building the state’s hunting and conservation legacy through habitat, education and advocacy. Photo submitted
