Walker Rotary met June 14 at the Up North Learning Center near Walker. Superintendent Brian Dietz addressed three areas the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School District is working on: 1. Strive Program where adults mentor seniors; 2. Interact Rotary High School Service group to aid those in the community; and 3.The Center, a $5.2 million facility funded by Sourcewell. Students attend from WHA, Nevis, Park Rapids, Laporte and Northland-Remer. Currently only elementary students attend. The Center opened for 2021-22 school year with five students and two teachers, and ended the year with eight. Ten are enrolled in the summer program. Next year plans are for one more teacher and students in grades K-8, providing crisis intervention, social skills and support. Eventually there could be up to 40 students. The Center also has a gymnasium, dining room, and playground. Pictured are Rotarians at the playground.
