Services will be held Jan. 11 at Annunciation Catholic Church, 509 W. 54th Street, in Minneapolis. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and service at 11.
Merle is survived by her daughter, Kate Hagglund Siegel; son-in-law, Dan Siegel; grandchildren, Owen and Charley Siegel; sister, Rae Kingrey; niece, Lisa Kingrey; and nephews, David Kingrey (Cindy), Curtis Kingrey (Arriya), Jeff Perkis (Evelyn), Ed Perkis (Lisa), and numerous cherished grand nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Merle and Grace Peterson; sister, Joan Myers; and niece, Rachel Kingrey.
Merle was born May 2, 1936, in Walker, Minn. She was salutatorian of her high School class and a member of the homecoming court at the University of Minnesota where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Upon graduating, she became a well-respected AP English and drama teacher. She was an avid golfer and relished being “scolded” on Scotland’s St. Andrews Golf Course, for taking “too long” to tee off. She was a voracious reader (mysteries were her favorite), lover of theater, and cinema. She was a devoted member of her Church and loved volunteering at the parish with her friends. She was well traveled and lived for a brief stint in California but was a Minnesotan at heart and looked forward each winter to the first snowfall. Her laugh was contagious. She was well known for her infectious dry sense of humor. She was a wise and trusted confidant and will be deeply missed.
Memorials preferred to Annunciation Church.
