Deep Portage Learning Center east of Hackensack announces its July schedule of public events.

The following sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the days noted. Fee is $7 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and younger, and $5 for seniors and Deep Portage members.

Call (218) 682-2325 ahead of time to register (same day registrations are accepted). Be sure to bring water and wear appropriate outdoor clothing.

Tuesday, July 9, Archery — Try your hand at archery. We will teach you about the history of the bow as a hunting tool, the fundamentals of shooting, and then do lots of practice on our targets. Deep Portage will provide bows and arrows.

Thursday, July 11, Canoeing — Enjoy Deep Portage by water. We will begin canoeing on Bass Pond, portage over to Big Deep Lake to see the iconic eagle’s nest, and perhaps even paddle down the scenic Little Boy River. Deep Portage will provide paddles, canoes and life jackets.

Tuesday, July 16, Orienteering —Learn the basics of using a map and compass to navigate through the woods, then go outdoors and practice those skills on our orienteering course. Deep Portage will provide compasses and maps. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes and long pants.

Thursday, July 18, Climbing Wall — Come climb on our 35-foot tall rock wall. Great for all ages and skill levels, climbing is always a fun time. Deep Portage will provide harnesses.

Tuesday, July 23, Bog Ecology Hike — What is a bog and why are they so special? Learn all about this unique ecosystem and search for the unusual plants that reside there.
