Fourteen teams completed in the seventh annual Cass County Friends of Youth Benefit Golf Tournament at Tianna County Club June 9 to raise funds to defray expenses for county youth exhibiting at the Minnesota State Fair.

Finishing in first place in the best ball, four-person scramble tourney was Cass Company Insurance Team No. 1 that included Tony, Mark and Jeff Peterson, and Dan Meier, shooting 8-under par and collecting a $300 prize.

Coming in second was Felton’s Renegades consisting of Rick Renstrom, Preston and Dana Stanko, and Scott Felton, scoring 6-under par and winning $200.

In third place was Cass Company Insurance Team No. 2 with a foursome of John Zaffke, Kris Barchus, Conrad Bristow and Paul Sasse coming in at 2-under par and winning $100.

All the winning teams donated their cash prizes back to the Friends of Youth State Fair Scholarship Fund.

Individual winners were Mark Johnson, Nancy Swerdfinger and Kris Barchus, who hit closest-to-the-pin drives, and Hank Hackman and Dave Hoopman, who rolled in longest putts.

The tournament is part of an annual fundraising drive sponsored by Cass County Friends of Youth to help county youth with expenses of exhibiting at the State Fair. Scholarships awarded help pay for travel, lodging, meals, and entry fees for a large variety of exhibits, including, for example, photography, computer science, entomology, geology, carpentry, food and animals, including livestock.

Friends of Youth began the fundraising when they became aware that  large numbers of youths who had won competitions at the Cass County Fair were unable to afford the expenses associated with the trip to St. Paul. A number of area organizations, businesses and individuals, including veterans posts, sponsored golf teams, purchased hole sponsorships and donated cash prizes and services to the tournament or directly to the scholarship fund.

The golf tournament concluded with a reception, awards and luncheon at Tianna.

Scholarship awards for this year will be announced when the number of State Fair participants is determined. Last year Friends of Youth distributed $6,843 to 26 county 4Hers to help defray their expenses for exhibiting at the fair. Golf tourney pictures may be viewed at the web site backuslegion.com
