The 4x200-relay team of Cole Nelson (from left), Tyler Sea, Clay Nelson and Kenner Bell proudly show off their golds medals and will compete at State.

The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys’ 800-relay team is heading to the State Track Meet Friday and Saturday at Hamline University, after the four beat out seven other teams at Saturday’s Section 8A Meet in East Grand Forks.

Seniors Kenner Bell, Cole Nelson, Tyler Sea and sophomore Clay Nelson finished with a 133.10, about half a second shy of breaking the section record of 132.54.

Also medaling but coming up just short of moving on to state were Jensen Rice in the pole vault, Cole Nelson in the 200, Bell in the 300 hurdles, and Sea in the 100 and 200.

Rice had a great day in the pole vault at 11-9 feet, which was good enough for third place.

Nelson had the fastest preliminary time in the 200 at 23.10, but in the finals pulled a hamstring late in the race and finished fourth at 23.63.

Sea finished fourth in the 100 at 11.61, .21 behind the first-place finisher, and took seventh in the 200 at 24.01.

Bell finished fifth in the hurdles at 41.79, just a little over a second out of first place.

As a team, WHA finished with 35 points and in eighth place out of 21 teams that had athletes competing. Park Rapids finished second with 60.5 points.

The five girls competing came up short of medaling.
