It took the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys’ golf team more than 50 years to win a section championship. Thursday afternoon they won their second Section 6A title in three years at Perham Lakeside Golf Course.
The Wolves found themselves tied with Pine River-Backus after day one with a 335. Ottertail Central was eight strokes back at 343 and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy was 13 strokes back with a 348.
Coach Carrie Johnson told her golfers the morning of day two, “You want it, go get it. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Don’t let one bad hole affect you.”
The boys did just that, finishing day two with a 327 for a 662. Hillcrest jumped to second place with a 684 and Pine River fell to third at 688.
“It was fantastic. The guys were ready and they were prepared.” Johnson noted.
After a first round 81, Rece Wiedmann turned it on the second day to finish second overall with a 154. His one-over 73 on day two was the low round of the day.
Mason Schneider had his best two rounds of the year, shooting an 83 and 78 to take fifth place with a 161.
Logan Arndt carded an 80 and 89, Trevor Johnson shot a 91 and 87, and Cody Sagen had a 95 and 92.
Tanner Schneider was unable to golf at sections, but will be back for the Class A State Tournament, which will be held June 11-12 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
Brady Raph of Pine River-Backus was the medalist for the second year in a row with a 147.
Noah Chase of Ottertail Central and Alex Iverson of Park Christian tied for third with a 157.
