The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys’ golf team got the season off to a great start as they won the opening Northern Pines Conference Meet of the season April 23 at Blueberry Pines in Menahga.
WHA shot a 172 to beat United North Central (UNC) by nine strokes. In third place was Park Rapids with a 185.
Sharing medalist honors were Tate Usher of Park Rapids and Colton Mitchell of Cass Lake-Bena, who both shot a 40. Rece Wiedmann of WHA and Andrew Aho of UNC tied for third with a 41.
For the rest of the Wolves, Mason Schneider shot a 42, Logan Arndt had a 43, Tanner Schneider and Cody Sagen both shot a 46 and Trevor Johnson finished with a 48.
On the girls’ side, Park Rapids won with a 144, eight strokes ahead of UNC. Finishing third was Pine River-Backus with a 153.
The medalist was Kinley Nordin of Park Rapids, who shot a 43. Taking second was Alayna Day of UNC with a 46 and Justine Day of WHA had a 49.
Wolves take third
The Wolves were in contention to win the Wolfpack Boys Invitational Friday at Tianna Country Club, but four of the five golfers did not have a good round.
The Detroit Lakes B team took first with a 347, Crookston was second with a 351 and the Wolves shot a 358 to finish third.
Arndt had a nice round and finished third with an 82. Crookston’s Trey Christofferson and Park Rapids’ Usher each shot an 81 to win medalist honors.
Wiedmann and Mason Schneider each shot a 90, Sagen had a 96 and Tanner Schneider carded a 104.
